Part 3

Interpreting Cultural Trends

Editorial Introduction

We now turn from cultural texts, like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights or the movie Gladiator, to cultural trends. Although trends can be less straightforward to interpret, they offer a potentially greater reward, since they often have a more direct connection to how we live. Such is the case with busyness: it is a pervasive experience for many Americans, and yet it is hard to nail down exactly what it means. This essay offers a clear example of how all three steps of cultural hermeneutics—understanding the cultural work, assessing it theologically, and formulating our response—can apply to a trend.
